Purpose. “What is it?” and “How do I find it?” are the questions most asked regarding purpose. Is
purpose then elusive? No; it’s not.
Finding our purpose is simply doing what energizes, inspires, and excites us. It is tapping into our inner selves and finding that thing, or the things that make us want to get out of bed in the morning, drives us to want to ‘do something’ to fix a situation when it seems out of whack or makes us ache with discontent when we are not able to contribute in some way to a situation. Finding our purpose can be delayed by several factors – circumstances, bad decisions, situations, self-doubt and the big one FEAR. Fear not only prevents us from trying, but it will embrace the negativity that others may try to put in our paths, cause us to isolate ourselves from others, and minimize or doubt our skills and talents. It will make us cringe when we should be trying to rise.
Fear emphasizes trivia and enlarge perceptions, allowing us to see mountains where there are none. Fear allows us to accept the insecurities of others and make them our own instead of rising above the steamy, stormy lower levels of generalization and the status quo, to the heights of creative and academic pursuits, self-achievement, and self-actualization. You see, what we don’t realize is that many times what we fear, fears us. If we find ways and means to eliminate our fear factors or triggers, or better yet, develop a mindset to ‘do it afraid,’ we will be on our way towards finding our purpose. We just have to want it bad enough.
Yes, our want or desire for achievement must be greater than our fear. How bad do you want it? Sounds cliché? Maybe, but that is the ultimate question. Think about it. Start with the end in mind. Pursue your passion and find your purpose.
